Hello! I’m Daniel Wieber
I am an Arabic-to-English translator, editor, subtitler, and educator based in Milwaukee, WI. I have been working locally and internationally to facilitate communication between language communities for over seven years. This work has involved close collaborations with international organizations, news agencies, and refugee resettlement agencies. I believe in human-centered language services that remove barriers and empower individuals, companies, and communities to build global connections.
When I am not translating, I am developing Arabic curriculum and teaching Arabic at the high school and university levels. I am currently working with my colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to develop high school Arabic curriculum for the state of Wisconsin.

My Translation Work
I have been working alongside NGOs and humanitarian organizations since 2015. I initially worked as a project coordinator at Learning for the Empowerment and Advancement of Palestinians (LEAP). This grassroots organization collaborates with Beit Atfal Assumoud in Lebanon to provide summer English-language programs to help Palestinian and Syrian students pass the national Brevet exam. While working for LEAP, I also conducted fieldwork and interviews for a Palestinian heritage preservation cookbook. I spent 3 consecutive summers with LEAP before beginning my master’s program in translation at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. While pursuing graduate degree I reconnected with a Palestinian organization in Lebanon to translate several pages for their local news website. During and after my graduate work in the United States, I worked as a linguist and service coordinator for the International Institute of Wisconsin, a refugee resettlement agency in Milwaukee.

The majority of my professional work has been in the field of education. I have taught Arabic courses at high school and university levels for over six years. I also teach humanities courses focused on anthropology, sociology, and religious studies. My student-centered curriculum is informed by the Multiliteracies Framework, Global Project Based Learning, and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy. If there were a large enough market for translation in this field, I would dedicate myself to translating social sciences full-time. My undergraduate degree was driven by my love of anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and religious studies. I delved deep into theories of embodiment, narrative theory, pragmatism, and historical sociology. I am familiar with a wide breadth of social science theories and I can trace their legacies through time. My degree gave me a familiarity with niche terms in social sciences and I am fascinated by how these heavy topics are framed and reframed in Arabic texts. I developed a passion for legal translation during my graduate program and have been studying the nuances of this field ever since. My more recent work in legal translation often intersects with the field of financial translation. My approach to legal and financial translation blends a knowledge of linguistic features of Arabic and English legal documents with in-depth research on the different legal systems connected to the source text and target text.
